Youth Corner
WHERE WE'VE BEEN

1999:

Kettering City Council and Kettering City Schools held a joint meeting. Kettering youths’ needs were listed as one of the top three priorities in the community. From this, the Healthy Youth Task Force was formed, and the first Kettering Youth Summit was held in May of that year with 250 adults, and a few student representatives.

• The Healthy Youth Task Force eventually formed two subcommittees: Youth in Action and Prevention Services.

2000:

Through Youth in Action, the committee was able to recruit a few interested youth to help organize the 2nd youth summit. More youth and less adults attended. A direct result of this summit was the youth council (then called Students Taking A New Direction).

• STAND was committed to fostering the Search Institute’s “Developmental Assets,” which are 40 factors that are essential to young people’s success.

2003:

STAND became the KYC. The KYC was formed in response to confusion with the anti-tobacco group STAND Ohio and in an attempt to increase the youth council’s involvement in the community.
